UARS/HALOE Online Visualization and Analysis

This interface is designed for visualization and analysis of the Atmospheric Profiles From UARS/HALOE. Users can generate Pressure (or Altitude) vs Parameter plots or ASCII Output for UARS/HALOE Sunrise and Sunset events. Selecting here or the Help button will open a new window with detailed help. More details about the data are also available. Map below displays HALOE Event coverage for a day specified in Time Selection. Help Button

Data Description

Atmospheric Profiles From UARS/HALOE

The Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) is onboard the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), and has operated without flaw since its activation on October 11, 1991. HALOE uses the principal of satellite solar occultation to measure profiles of solar attenuation by the atmosphere's limb, as the sun rises or sets relative to the spacecraft.

HALOE measurements cover two latitude bands each day (16 profiles each), one at the latitude of sunsets and one at the latitude of sunrises. The progression of measurement latitude with time provides near global coverage over periods of 3-4 weeks.

The HALOE data have been extensively validated by comparison with several correlative measurements. Data are of high quality and are suitable for research use. However there are some minor known and suspected errors that the user should be aware of, especially from October 1991 to December 1992 (due to Mt. Pinatubo eruption in June 1991) when aerosols induced uncertainty in the retrieval of most of the species in the tropics and subtropics are high.
